Eggplant: Buy, Cook, Order...Soon!

Eggplants are one of those foods that taste and smell wonderful when served at a restaurant but tend to evade our grocery store lists. Their daunting size and tough skins make us shy away from cooking them as a regular side dish. But I'm here to tell you that, while they might require a bit more attention, Eggplants are so delicious and healthy that they're worth the extra effort!...Read More.

Frozen Yogurt: Not So Healthy!

Many of us have been deceived by the health claims of frozen yogurt companies. I'm not here to place them all under one umbrella or dispel the touted benefits of individual manufacturers, but all in all, this stuff just isn't good for us. And, no, we don't believe that "low calorie", "no-fat" and sugar-free" are necessarily good things. Many healthy whole grains have high calorie content, after all, and avocados and coconut oil, although high in fat, are wonderful for our bodies. As for "sugar-free", this is one of the most misunderstood claims. Artificial sweeteners like Splenda, Sweet-N-Low, Equal, etc. contain harsh, toxic chemicals...Read More.

Three Branches Worst Nightmare: The Luther Burger

Fried chicken on a stick, foot-long corn dogs, funnel cake sundaes, deep-fried twinkies, deep-fried oreos, deep-fried snickers...pretty much anything deep-fried...and many more concoctions of flour, salt, sugar, and fat is what I found myself surrounded by as I walked through the Mississippi Sate Fair last night. The Low-Down on Antioxidants

What are Antioxidants?

We hear this word thrown around quite a bit, but do we really know what they are? Antioxidants are nutrients that occur naturally in food (real, whole food, that is!) and can prevent or slow down our body's damaging oxidative process. When our cells use oxygen, by-products called free radicals are produced. For instance, when our bodies break down food or when we're exposed to environmental toxins. They can...Read More

100% Pure Beeswax Candles

While browsing through a little Fair Trade store in Jackson, Mississippi, I was thrilled to come across some 100% pure beeswax candles. I have some great candle sticks that have stood empty-handed for a little while now because I just had not gotten around to getting quality candles and I know how horrible most candles can be for your health.

It's ironic that candles are mostly burned in people's homes or offices to create a sweet or fresh smelling aroma, and yet candles are one of the biggest pollutants to indoor air quality. Unfortunately most candles...Read More

Eric Schlosser Reveals Hard Truths About Food

A few weeks back, we blogged on the Progressive Forum event (held at the Wortham Center in downtown Houston) that featured Eric Schlosser as last night's guest speaker. For a refresher, Schlosser is the author of Fast Food Nation, a book that started a revolution in how Americans think about what they eat. He also co-produced and co-starred in Food, Inc. What an amazing man! Listening to him speak (in such a matter-of-fact, eloquent and knowledgeable tone) last night was truly inspiring. I wanted to share some of the highlights of his talk, the facts and ideas that really...Read More.

Salt Flush for Constipation

Bowel movements. Yes, I said it. Everyone has them...or, should I say everyone should have them! And that's what the topic is on today.

I can't tell you how many people ask me (some less discreet than others) what to do about maintaining regularity. For some of us, having a B.M. just comes naturally and we wonder why everyone else gives two "poops" about it. But for the unfortunate rest, its inconsistency (and absense!) can dictate our mood, make or break a day, and leave us feeling groggy, bloated and...Read More.
